Demolition Progress Advances Across David Jones Building, Car Park and Diggers Club at The Globe Development.
Demolition works at The Globe redevelopment site in Wollongong CBD have entered a major new phase, with significant progress now visible across the former David Jones building, multi-level car park and the City Diggers Club precinct.
The project team has successfully removed multiple suspended slabs from the David Jones building, marking an important milestone in the transformation of the site. Weatherproof cladding has also been installed on the remaining sections of the structure to protect the building as demolition continues.
Attention has now shifted to the demolition of the multi-level car park and the strip-out of the former Diggers Club. As demolition zones have opened up, the scale of machinery on site has significantly increased to improve efficiency and productivity. Machines that previously weighed around 10 tonnes have now been replaced with larger 30-tonne excavators equipped with powerful demolition attachments weighing up to 2.5 tonnes.
The demolition team has already completed the majority of the car park demolition, with rubble being strategically placed into basement areas as works progress through the structure. Multiple levels of suspended slabs and structural faces are continuing to be removed methodically throughout the site.
A strong focus remains on sustainability and recycling throughout the demolition process. Steel reinforcement and concrete materials are being carefully separated and stockpiled before being transported to recycling facilities. Concrete is being pulverised into smaller reusable materials, while large quantities of reinforced steel are being processed for recycling.
One of the standout pieces of equipment currently operating on site is a 25-tonne zero-swing excavator fitted with a high-powered rotating pulveriser. The attachment is capable of delivering up to 310 tonnes of cutting pressure, allowing operators to efficiently cut through reinforced concrete beams, columns and thick steel reinforcement with precision.
Inside the former Diggers Club, crews have commenced detailed strip-out works ahead of structural demolition. Non-structural elements including carpets, ceilings, wall linings, timber and metal products are being removed and separated for recycling, leaving behind the building’s structural shell in preparation for the next stage of demolition.
Smaller earthmoving equipment is also assisting within the building, with compact excavators and grapple attachments being used to move material safely through the site and into designated loading and disposal zones.
While the demolition of the long-standing Diggers Club marks the end of an era for many in Wollongong, excitement continues to build around the future of The Globe redevelopment and the transformation it will bring to the city centre. The demolition team has indicated further updates will be provided as works continue to progress toward the complete removal of the existing structures.
