Construction Begins on The Globe: A New Landmark Rising in Wollongong.

An exciting milestone for the development team behind The Globe project, as construction officially commenced at the iconic former David Jones site on Crown Street, Wollongong.

The developers expressed immense pride and enthusiasm about the significant impact The Globe will have on Wollongong’s city centre. This ambitious $230 million redevelopment includes a modern six-storey City Diggers Club, an eight-storey commercial tower, and an elegant 14-storey five-star hotel complex.

The commencement ceremony attracted key local figures, including Wollongong City Council Lord Mayor Tania Brown and Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully. Mayor Brown shared nostalgic memories about her first job at the former David Jones, underscoring the site's historical significance and its potential to offer exciting new opportunities for future generations. Minister Scully emphasised the project's transformative role in Wollongong’s urban renewal, highlighting its potential to revitalise the city's vibrant community heart.

The development team is particularly proud of The Globe's potential to address critical local needs such as job creation and quality accommodation, especially at a time when Illawarra is increasingly hosting significant events and attracting visitors. The timely addition of the hotel complex supports the region's growing tourism and event industry.

Planned in three phases, the project is expected to see the City Diggers Club and commercial offices completed by mid-2028. The final phase, featuring the luxurious hotel, aligns closely with the NSW government's strategic goal to increase hotel capacity across the state.

The ceremony symbolised more than the start of construction—it marked the beginning of a vibrant new chapter for Wollongong, driven by a visionary team committed to reshaping the city's landscape and future.
